Good Lord, I completely forgot yeah .....
Well, I greatly apologize to everyone (mostly myself considering the number of hits this thing gets) but between work, life (or the lack of) and a few physical aches and pains, I have completely lost track of this baby.
I was watching a video earlier and in doing so, it made me think .... didn't I used to write something about these things? Didn't I used to drink a few cold ones and share a little bit of my silliness on the youtube? Then I remembered you and thought, lets do another one.
Hopefully this will prompt me to get back into the swing of things.....As for that video....
Click 1 - Mista Bone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWfwm8vmWsA
First, you did not read that title wrong, it is spelled correctly. Watch the video and that part will be self-explanatory.
Second, at my age in the 80's it was fairly customary for most young men to have leather jackets or "leathers" for short. I had an awesome "heavy metal" style leather jacket that I purchased at great expense in those days from JCPenny.
I know, JCPenny is not the coolest rock-n-roll clothier in the world, but it is what I could afford in those days. However, a plain leather jacket was not the plan, so after breaking in the jacket, I took it to a local airbrush artist that "customized" the back for me. That cost around 20 dollars and about half my poster collection at the time (a BIG sacrifice in those days). Anyway, the design was based on this song. It was a human skull, kinda smiling, wearing a red bandanna that read "Mista Bone".
You can see the design on a few of Great Whites other videos that include the tour bus where the design was painted onto the back of the bus.
Cheezy by today's standards???? Hell Yes. But by a teenagers standards in the mid 80's into that most awesome "hair metal", I was awesome. I still wish I knew which wife or girlfriend from those days took the jacket so I could get it back!!!!! At this point, I would frame it and hang it like a museum piece.
Click 2 - Your so Vain - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41zKVmk4z8Q
So, Carly Simon shows up on this blog ... nah, its a cover and a pretty bad one at that. I have generally enjoyed Faster Pussycat (yes, named after that awful movie from the late 60's) but this is bad. Enough Said.
Click 3 - Someone Like You - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5u0yiplamdw
Bang (Bango?) Tango came on late in the 80's and basically missed the gravy train. They may have even been "big" had they come along at the right time. The shameful thing is that this isn't terrible other than the singers voice (which disturbs me for some reason?). I've heard other songs from these guys that I really liked, so I guess this song just doesn't work for me. I will admit that I never owned any of their stuff.
Special note - I think we are definitely stuck in the 80's at this point. Sorry or Congrats! Your choice.
Click 4 - Walkin Shoes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k9UDRO43Vc
Good Lord, so happy this one showed up in the list. I will never forget walking into "Turtles Records" as it was called in those days and the manager smiling and saying I got something new for you!!!!!!!!! He hit that opening guitar lick and I said sold. These young boys if I remember right where all in high school when this was recorded. Memphis blues rock, yeah, that works for me. This band arrived a "little" late to the whole 80's sound (thanks Nirvana) but they had this and one more successful album.
Click 5- Thats Life - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Orh6JEjtliE
Not sure that I have ever featured this band, but they are my favorite band that hit it a little too late in the 80s. A bunch of boys from Texas that ventured out to Cali to try and hit it big. The first album featuring this song was awesome. Sadly, the second one aptly titled "6s, 7s and 9s" was just that and failed them.
Click 6 - Simple Man - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX2YXd5FoXo
Since I enjoyed the previous video so much, I will break a rule and go with two from the same band tonight since I haven't heard from these guys in years. Try a more southern version of Junkyard and see what I mean about them being from Texas. They were truly talented. It makes me wonder if they had stayed at home could they have done better?
Wow, its been a long time, I will try to remember this outlet a little more frequently. Having gone through this exercise tonight, I remember it being rather therapeutic. All the more reason to do it more often!!!!!!!

Pre-Fourth of July Trip
What do you say to a pre-Fourth of July Trip? This one is going to be ALL about rock and roll though.
Click 1 - Burning Beard - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nIAnCJL1f0
I love me some Clutch, not really the guys, just the music! Strange video.
Click 2 - Hank is Dead - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgV7hnjoyt0&list=RDkHxiouKy8Ho&index=3
Two thoughts, one, how weird is the whole shower scene at the beginning? Two, its nice to see someone drinking cheaper beer than me! OK! So maybe I have a third thought, how funny is the whole air guitar contest.
Click 3 - Save me from Myself -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMz3DmVUHQI&index=41&list=RDkHxiouKy8Ho
Holy Cow, so you know my love of Orange Goblin and my love/hate relationship with the videos that are nothing more than the album cover and the song!!!! This is no different! This my favorite song on the album (maybe second favorite?) but there is not a real video. I hope you like it. I like the pseudo-harmony sound in the middle of the song. I also like the whole concept of "saving me from myself". There are times when I understand this particular lyric more than anything else.
Click 4 - Doomsday Machine - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2SdzgPj3_o&list=RDkHxiouKy8Ho&index=40
Kadavar has burst onto the scene with this super thick 70's sound. I really like this song and band.
Click 5 - King of the Road - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Zko7pBeHkk&list=RDkHxiouKy8Ho&index=26
Fu Manchu is awesome !!!!! Their music has been used for various shows on AE and other skateboarding and bike building shows. I originally found this song on one of those Jesse James bike building shows.
Click 6 - Space Lord - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dscfeQOMuGw&list=RDkHxiouKy8Ho&index=6
This might be a repeat, not sure in my current mind space, but Monster Magnet is one of my favorites. I love this video!!! This is another one of those guys that I wish I was half as cool as. Dave is a strange combination of lots of things that make me wish rock and roll had called me into the fold earlier in life (or that I had had the talent for rock and roll).

Older Ladies !!!!!!!!!!!! Are Divine ??????????????????
OMG. Spotted the starter block in a rather strange place today (not divulging that location) but I am divulging this video. I think it is awesome. Maybe a silver headed fox is what I should be looking for ......
Click 1 - Older Ladies - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4QzHeUE-CM
This is a really funny way to look at the idea of an older woman. In my 20's an older woman was an awesome idea (of course they were in there 30s then) but now .... lets just say keep your eyes open for all possibilities, you never know when the best thing in your life might appear.
With that said and that video posted, I am EXTREMELY concerned about where this might lead us. Let me look at the suggestions, we may need to take a detour.......
Yep! As a expected, I tried a couple of the "you should try this links" and we do NOT want to try any of those! Oh well, lets detour and have a fun trip ....
Click 2 - Sensible Shoes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKWiKNMKhgQ
I won't even lie! Its taken about 1 hour to find a reasonable detour, but I think this one will work.... Funny thing is I didn't know this video existed! The song finally popped into my head after 60 minutes of failure trying to follow Click 1. I think this one works but in a REALLY odd kinda way.
Its no secret that I think that DLR is one of the best front men ever! Tight lyrics that actually make sense, humor to go along with it and a look that I will never be able to reflect. I think this video shows all three! This is probably the last thing that he did that exhibited all three of those attributes. Did I mention that Dave is one of my favorite "brushes with greatness"? Ask me about it some time and I will explain.
Click 3 - Rock Me - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg06B46VVys
Sometimes, when you pick a video by a well established band, its tough for Youtube to give you any suggestion other than that band. Tonight, I find myself in that position with Dave except for this one suggestion, which happens to be awesome. I got a couple of Great White stories but I dont think sharing them here is appropriate. If you want a full description of this awesome band, ask me, lets just say that one starts with a pistol and the other starts with a married woman. The rest go down from there, but its all about the rock n roll so ROCK ME.
Click 4 - Slow and Easy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9uFNHvDBVg
Well at least we have choices now. Known as a Robert Plant wanna be, Whitesnake leader singer is an awesome influence on the eighties music scene. Some of that has to do with the videos featuring his then girlfriend, Tawny Kitaen! O yeah, look her up on Google and that white dress! Anyways, this is an awesome song. This one pre-dates her but probably helped lead him in that direction. Strange but real fact, this guy was at one point considered a possible replacement for Bon Scott (after his untimely death) in AC/DC. Great song and still one of my favorite band names of all time. I only have one story about this band, I was able to find myself in an elevator with both David and Tawny in Birmingham Alabama a few hours before the show and he was not so nice, but she was truly as beautiful in that moment as she was in that video. Bottom line, he was DICK!!!! I guess he wan't happy that I was in the elevator?
Click 5 - Dirty Little Mind - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FMNb4Jw2KI
So Jackyl is a really fun band originally out of the Atlanta area. I think Jesse owns a rather large bar these days around Sturgis!!!!!! You might have seen him on a few show.....?????? I think this one hit the streets during my second marriage. I have never seen this band live (kinda odd I know). However, my second wife did see them live and bought me this really cool (at least rock wise) shirt that had printed on the back "Rock Me, Roll Me, Jackyl Me Off". See the shirt at 0:55 of the video. Still have that freakin shirt somewhere.....
Click 6 - Thunderkiss 65 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPNFVj-pISU
I love this song and video and I am super happy this one came up in the list. The video has a whole Faster Pussycat vibe going which is really cool (look that one up, 1965 exploitation movie) that I actually paid 90s money to see. Fun and groovy all at the same time. Funny thing is that this is not the only band to refer to their love of the movie, think Faster Pussycat!!!! Where did they get that name from?
And with that, we end this trip!

Well, Its Sunday, Lets see what is being offered
Its Sunday evening. I have had a good weekend. I wonder what Youtbue is offering for the nights adventure...
Click 1 - Gypsy Road - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j7E7pvLxmI
Wow, without a doubt one of the coolest sounding "blues rock" bands ever. I've been able to see them several times but not on this particular tour. I think its is cool too see the band playing around the Aztec ruins. Hard to believe I didn't see this back in the day!
Click 2 - The Ballad Of Jayne - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6198qSm0Y0
One of the most underrated bands of the hair metal days. They got lost in the whole Guns n Roses scene. A really soft ballad that stands the test of time, but also demonstrates why they got lost in the shuffle. How could this band even afford that much production on their second album as the "metal" business was dying?
Click 3 - Fly to the Angels - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukmobha2krY
Never figured this one would end up here but that is what happens when you allow Youtube to guide you. Without a doubt, one of the prettiest singers of the 80s (not that I float that way) and one of the coolest sounding voices too (probably has to do with the effects channel). Love the visual of the vintage planes setting against the lyrics though.
Click 4 - Yankee Rose -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9_VIXvCgl8
Speaking of pretty, its my honeymoon night baby!! I love the late eighties David Lee Roth videos. These things are as funny as the lyrics that the man comes up with .... So give me a bottle of anything and a glazed doughnut to goooooooooo ............. forget about it! Coming off the fall out with VH, Dave went out on his on! I met Dave in Huntsville Alabama on this tour. Strange story, we were both taking a leak by a dumpster on the backside of the Von Braun. I couldn't talk him into some passes for the show but it was awesome, go back to Click 1 - Cinderella opened on an earlier album.
Click 5 - Get the Funk Out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1AxoPTAgxA
Musically speaking these guys are tight. DAMN, that was one amazing solo at the start of the song! AND another one at the 4:45 minute mark! That singer spent a "minute" as the singer for VanHanlen!!!!!!!!!!
Click 6 - Solo/Eruption - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDOFIttS69I
Just for fun, we will end with another VanHalen reference. Eddy is an amazing guitarist! but needs to check his ego at the door. Then again, if I could play to well, the last thing I would check at the door is my EGO>
Nice trip!

Its Friday, lets get stone'rd
Its Friday, I need Friday! Its been a really long week and I hope this will help me to wash some of the week's crap off of me...... Well now its Saturday, I wasn't able to complete this last night for a variety of reasons.... Lets see what we have and what we need to add......
Click 1 - Viking - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw3vWT8fy0w
I love the 70's inspired sound that these guys have going! I also like the fact that it is so close to modern rock n roll sound. For me, this is the "bomb" from a driving sound that needs little or no introduction. This is my first listen of the band and song, let me know what you think
Click 2 - Badass Rock n Roll - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeGmo_0gsSg
WOW! Anvil has gotten a little attention of late as one of the last "hangers on" from the greatest decade musically. These guys have to be approaching my Dad's age which is inspiring to me. The sound is kinda generic which is why the never made it to the top, but at least they aren't slaving to a 9-5 job.
Click 3 - Gandalf Took the Drug- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7cF8ib6VYk
I have no idea of where this comes from, but I love the combination of slide guitar and harmonica! This is some crazy stuff and I love the Tolkien reference. This one reminds me of a favorite band, Five Horse Johnson except for the vocals. I will need to dig a little deeper into this band.
Click 4 - Hocus Pocus - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ouPGGLI6Q
Well, I can absolutely say that I have never heard lyrics like that! Strange might be the only way to describe this one, but it is original. The keyboardist eye's are insane...... and a standing ovation at the end? Goodness knows where this might lead to.....
Click 5 - Radar Love - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQjqqy2hhDA
This is a live version from that Midnight Special show that I dont remember ever seeing as a kid, but it looks like it was awesome. Anyway, White Lion covered this in the 80's using a heavier drum to bring out the sound which is what turned me onto the song. Terry Bozio (spelling?) played drums with Golden Earring if I remember correctly and he went on to play with Jeff Beck in his solo days.
Click 6 - Blinded by the Light - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcWVL4B-4pI
Hit another Midnight Special, man I need to dig into those archives. Check out this super cool edition! Odd fact, Bruce Springsteen originally wrote and recorded this song!
Strange trip, not sure why I didn't complete it last night (well......) but I enjoyed finishing it today.

I have no idea of where this comes from, but I love the combination of slide guitar and harmonica! This is some crazy stuff and I love the Tolkien reference. This one reminds me of a favorite band, Five Horse Johnson except for the vocals. I will need to dig a little deeper into this band.

Well, I can absolutely say that I have never heard lyrics like that! Strange might be the only way to describe this one, but it is original. The keyboardist eye's are insane...... and a standing ovation at the end? Goodness knows where this might lead to.....

Hit another Midnight Special, man I need to dig into those archives. Check out this super cool edition! Odd fact, Bruce Springsteen originally wrote and recorded this song!
Strange trip, not sure why I didn't complete it last night (well......) but I enjoyed finishing it today.

Orchestra Time?
Wow! As you can guess, I am not a big fan of orchestra music. Sure, it takes a tremendous amount of time and practice to develop the skills to be included in an orchestra and they do sound amazing in the right music hall with the acoustics, etc. but Rock N Roll? Not really.
A few years ago, a few bands thought it would be a neat night out for them to team up with an orchestra and play their songs. Old geezers at the orchestra house (and season tickets) get an introduction to modern rock and roll and young kids get an introduction to the cello. Fair enough, Metallica pulled it off rather well but as an accompaniment to the band!
Today, I found this starter video which will no doubt land us on some rather strange combinations ... As Jim said, "People are Strange....."

Love the enthusiasm of the ladies on the stage. Can't and won't guess the ladies age, but that one in the black dress seemed to be enjoying a little more than the rest. Was she a plant or a MOM that really needed to fun night out (and hit the bottle early)?

Awesome song, with or without the orchestra! In listening to this it makes me wonder of who is at the disadvantage, orchestra or band? With the orchestra, the band has to be so amazingly tight from a timing standpoint (almost TOO structured for a rock and roll sound). At the same time, the orchestra (or conductor at least) better be prepared to "resynch" as necessary. Maybe I'm wrong on both accounts as I have ZERO musical skills, just looking in from the fans side.

So, I don't know anything about Lucie Silvas except she is gorgeous and can sing. I don't know the story of her choosing a Metallica song to perform (maybe she does this often?). However, that sure is an uptight looking orchestra crowd sitting around those initial tables. I wonder if they heard the original would they be so appreciative of the song?

Lots happening here! First, Tommy is from my hometown and we went to the same high school, a couple of years apart. I played ball with his cousin. This is a youth orchestra, which makes this so much more amazing to me. Lastly, they are not even playing a song by the band Styx. Lots of practice required to pull this one off.

I had to do a little double check just to make sure, but this is the John Anderson of (semi) fame the band Yes. I wasn't a big fan of "progressive" rock and roll in my early days but his voice is so recognizable from Yes videos on MTV (yeah, back when they were a video station not pregnant pre-teens). Its fun to simply see the just how much fun the kids are having during the show.

Based on the explanation, I guess that is the name of the song. I'm not a fan of Ben Fold or whatever he/they are called, but hethey are playing with the contemporary orchestra and its fun how he pulls them all together to make it interesting. I guarantee this guy has a lot more in his music repatriate than standard rock n roll skills based on his pulling that together (rehearsed or not).
Fabulous and accidental find to kick us off and fun to run with the concept ..... I hope you enjoyed it too.
